FOSI Report: Online Safety Across the Generations
A new study for the Family Online Safety Institute explores the benefits and challenges of intergenerational technology use. The national surveys of older Americans and parents of connected children reveal that, despite concerns about potential harms of technology use, both audiences feel that there are real benefits of using technology and the Internet.
For parents, concern about content outweighs concern about screentime, though many would like more control over both aspects. Seniors who report using the Internet express worries about online safety and security. Both parents and seniors indicate that they are taking proactive steps to protect themselves (seniors) and their children (parents), and both audiences are talking to their children and grandchildren about the importance of being safe online. Indeed, parents and seniors feel that technology and the Internet have had a positive impact on their lives and families and have brought generations together.
