Poll: Tennesseans Are against Government Penalties That Worsen Families’ Financial Hardship

A recent survey in Tennessee conducted by Hart Research, on behalf of ThinkTennessee, shows that seven in 10 (72%) Tennessee voters are concerned about the high rate of Tennesseans with debt in collections, most believe many of the penalties imposed by government are unfair, and a majority support reforms that would reduce government penalties on those in financial distress. Additionally, the survey found that COVID-19 is having a profound economic impact across the state.  When asked to name the most important issues facing Tennessee, 35% of voters say COVID-19, which is the top issue, followed by issues impacted by COVID-19, including the loss of jobs/unemployment (21%) and the economy/economic issues (20%).
